I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to see this production. I will freely admit that this is the first Shakespearean play I have seen onstage, my other experiences with Shakespeare has been on film or on page.

Trrafalfar studio one is a rather intimate stage (seats 380 I think), and this evening I found myself on fifth row. A small part of the audience was also sat on “the other side” of the stage, as a part of the backdrop. The stage was set like a “war room” or newsroom from the sixties, and a lot of other effects and even the costumes reflected that to some point. The actors smoked and drank profusely during the show, and it all reminded me of… Watergate or the Cold War. The fact that the air conditioning wasn’t doing anything and the theatre was hot and stuffy added to the intensity. After a certain point I gave up keeping track of the body count. Richard III is a ruthless man, and it all got very bloody and violent. Poor people at the first few front rows…
